Forget the energy mix. Just build modular nukes. Fast.
Why abundant reliable energy is within our government's gift.
Everyone likes to talk about the brilliance of the energy "mix." But maybe the mix is a mistake - the result of too much group think, too much optimism and too many subsidies. Renewables aren’t turning out to be quite as tip top as many hoped. Perhaps spending fortunes generating unreliable energy far from where it is needed and then many more fortunes to build a landscape destroying infrastructure to deliver it to where it is needed isn’t the best idea after all… So how about we dump all of the "mix" except small modular reactors and perhaps a little gas (cheap, simple).
Get it right and not only will the grid will be next zero in a decade (there is no other way to this target) but electricity really will be cheap and abundant. Imagine a world where instead of being nagged to retro insulate your home and just put up with the black mould (for the planet!) you are able to use as much energy as you like. Heating on. Windows open. There's a hint some politicians are beginning to see that the current plan isn’t working - and that the other might. Note the mention in the Conservative manifesto out yesterday about approving SMR rollouts. It's a start... My Bloomberg column on the matter here
